As we read our newsfeeds full of hate and bigotry validated by Holy books completely misunderstood by the reader I had to share this bright spot on my newsfeed by the beautiful and talented New Orleans poet…..Miss Asia Rainey.

I am not just gay friendly.

I am gay familiar, acquainted and connected.

I have homosexual tendencies and probablies.
I have gay friends.
I’ve had gay jobs and worn gay clothes.
I’ve gone to gay places and watched the watchers wonder why I was there.
I’ve watched gay relatives try appear to be not gay even though everyone knew they were gay but nobody’s supposed to say you’re gay around family.
My gay-dar is like the CIA meets Sherlock Holmes and Iyanla Vanzant.
I’ve never called “no homo” because there might be some.
I have clicked on gay news and been on the side of wishing people would stop being so gay-stupid.
I do not change my FB pic to a rainbow flag because I figure you still have pleeenty enough to talk about to keep you busy. No use making haters jobs harder.
I have been in the middle of all kinds of gay-ness,
Which was in the middle of all kinds of kumbayah do-you-ness
And the gayness had to stay hidden because
The do-you-ness was a trap
I have watched people live unhappily
Because of judgment too nasty to stomach
Or a parent’s reaction being impossible to guarantee.
I would have held her hand in public.
But I understand that kind of fear.
I am glad she got free, but
Free don’t stop bullets or words.

This is not a “coming out” poem.

This poem recognizes the been-who-I-am-and-I-do-what-I-choose poet

But this poem is not FOR me.

This is a poem that is tired of dogma and judgement

For those who will no longer breathe

Because someone decided they should be an example of God’s wrath type-poem.

This poem is not for me at all.

This poem giggles at those

Who will pick it apart for clues and shout

“I knew it!! See?!”

As if they just super sleuthed a new dagger to stab with.

No. But this poem is for them.

The ones who will let all the talk die down

And go back to exclaiming “no homo!”

Let their daughters marry good boys even though she cringes

This is for those who say they will tolerate “gay”

With accepting memes and 5 inch distance hugs

As if someone asked you to take it

Asked you to be Ok with it existing in YOUR world

For those ready to grant “permission” for it all to be ok…over there.

This poem just outed EVERYBODY.

The scale of sins will not discriminate.

So to those for whom this poem belongs,

Unfriend me with a flourished click

And bask in your bloody self righteousness.

Wipe your palms. There’s still a bit of red.

The beautiful thing about Facebook, though

Is that I won’t know you’re gone

And the beautifuller thing about growth

Is that I won’t miss you if this poem is yours.

Love, Asia Rainey

Dedicated to those slain in Orlando, and in New Orleans, and around the world; to every one bashed and beaten, every slur thrown, every job lost, to every family member shunned, for every suicide, every lost love, regretted life
