It’s no secret here in New Orleans that the French Quarter businesses still operated under the plantation politics the area was founded under. Discrimination, exclusion, and bigotry are just par for the course when dining in French Quarter establishments. It’s so common place that it isn’t even hidden anymore. Black businesses are excluded so effectively that they make up less than 1% of businesses in the Quarter. The campaign to make sure downtown would be “vanilla” has been in full effect since former Mayor Ray Nagin declared it would be a Chocolate City again. The bigots in the area are now so comfortable that they don’t even bother hiding it anymore.

The blacks are discouraged and conditioned that speaking out against it would be a full time job. Luckily for them I have plenty of time to publicly out these bigots when such blatant examples are presented. And nothing is more blatant than recieving a receipt with a server referring to you as a “Nigger” for getting their meal comped.

huck finn

The full name of the business is Huckfinns Cafe at 135 Decatur St., New Orleas, LA. Eyewitness reports say the server was ranting about “Those customers.” Because we all know blacks can’t ask for extra ketchup without being called difficult.

Personally, I’m not sure why any self-respecting black person would eat there. The environment is overtly “uncomfortable” for “us”, but I suppose that’s anywhere in the French Quarter so it’s hard to tell the difference. Either way, please stop giving your money to businesses that allow this type of behavior. Sure we’ll get the whole “We’re just as upset about this as you are” response, and “the server has been fired” only to see her back there a week later smiling, grinning, and feeling secure.

But these are the type of people that post on Facebook that black people make up racism and ask why Al Sharpton doesn’t protest when whites are victimized and it goes unpunished (when we all know that rarely happens)

So add Huck Finn’s to the “Dead2Me” list, and spit on their door the next time you pass!
