The Australian tabloid, The Herald Sun of Melbourne owned by Rupert Murdoch, which posted the above overtly racist cartoon of Serena Williams at the US Open is defending the depiction and backing the illustrator claiming is not at all racist and is about what they percieved to be poor sportsmanship.

The cartoonist, Mark Knight, continued to defend the racist depiction..

“The cartoon about Serena is about her poor behavior on the day, not about race,” Mr. Knight said in an article on the Herald Sun website about the backlash.

Backed by The newspaper’s editor, Damon Johnston, he added this

A champion tennis player had a mega-tantrum on the world stage, and Mark’s cartoon depicted that,” he said. “It had nothing to do with gender or race.

What you’ll notice about the illustration is that even though these racists say it’s not about race take special note that the Haitian and Japanese contender, Naomi Osaka, was drawn as a conventionally pretty blonde white women next who is drawn in similar to the racist trope cartoons made so famous across the world by racist caucasians throughout history.

It was obviously about race with Serena depicted from the perspective many Trump voters are always criticizing black looks from. And you’ll read many great articles detailing the history of these racist cartoons. Like this New York Times article, but will these white platforms be held to the same penalties that black platforms, entertainers, and athletes are held to?

And how do a group of people who are always calling themselves “superior” constantly get away with “not knowing” simple things in life? Like what racism is and when something is culturally insulting. #TheKnow

How does someone who calls themselves an editor or a cartoonist not have any frame of reference for the history of their craft?

We’ll see black athletes fined for the least emotional outbreak. And we’ll see black entertainers and bloggers “cancelled” for the smallest infraction of a social norm that whites set and gatekeeping blacks so eagerly uphold, but then you’ll have someone like Charlie Sheen admit to giving numerous people AIDS and continue to get Hollywood jobs.

Let’s also not pretend this is about “sportsmanship” {That’s always a funny concept from people who believe that colonizing continents and exterminating the native people is diplomacy}. This is about racism, and nothing exemplifies that more than how they depict Naomi. As a white woman. She isn’t a white woman, but they prefer her to Serena for her racial mixture, demure attitude, and youth. So as they prop her up, they must tear Serena down. And they prop Naomi up by aligning her with whiteness. But Serena should be used to this at this point. Not to be dismissive but tennis is no more diverse than when she first started decades ago.

Qool Hive, can you believe the audacity of their denial? Or is it to be expected from Australians whose colonizers have a notorious history of race?
